Hi, all: My friend with the little 32-weeker who is now 7 months of age
and has been maintained solely on ebm by bottle and nurses only for
comfort has had terrible reflux, is maxed out on propulsid and zantac,
feeds extremely slowly and recently has essentially stopped gaining
weight. She had an upper GI which was very reassuring, and the pedi GI
recommended switching to formula because - get this - the baby may be
associating the taste of the breast milk with pain and that's why she's
feeding poorly.
Thankfully, my friend didn't like the sound of that and we've discussed
other ways, such as supplementing her milk, etc.
Now my question. I seem to remember that there was mention of a possible
connection between cow's milk allergy and reflux. This baby had early
breast milk fortifier (the neonatologist assured the mother, who has a
family history of asthma, that there's no cow's milk in it - is she
steamed now that she's discovered that it did), so has been sensitized to
cow's milk. Does anyone have a reference on this issue, as I couldn't
find it in the archives. TIA, Alicia.
