Actually, sertraline (Zoloft) is, with paroxetine (Paxil), *the* SSRI
antidepressants of choice for nursing mothers.  The physician is wrong,
since the decision is up to the mother not him/her.  There is a nice
little article in the New England Journal on the *non effect* of
sertraline on the nursing infant of mothers taking it (April 17, 1997).
