Dear Patricia, I still believe that if a drug is not FDA approved for a
certain purpose because of the risks involved in using it, a patient
certainly has the right to that information as well.  Certainly, she could
make an informed decision after ALL of the facts are presented to her.  Of
course drugs are used for other purposes than what they were initially
manufactured for, but the fact of the matter is that Parlodel no longer has
FDA approval for use to suppress lactation because of SERIOUS side effects
(including stroke and death).  The doctors in my area are very quick to
inform a mom that she cannot use an antidepressant and many other drugs that
are deemed safe with supervision.  This morning already, I have had a mom
that delivered 2 weeks ago call and ask me if it was safe for her to resume
breastfeeding after receiving her immunization for Rubella postpartum.  Her
doctor told her she must pump and dump for 31 days!!!  31 days of not
breastfeeding her newborn.  I am sorry but I simply do not understand how
some drugs can receive the approval of so many health care professionals,
while others are  considered "dangerous".
