Dear lactnetters,
I'm an LC in MS who doesn't write in very often, but mostly reads
and learns. I'm having a problem with a baby right now and wanted some
feedback from others. I've been working with a mom who has given several
bottles to the baby while in the hospital. The baby has become very
nipple confused, extremely fussy at the breast, hardly wanting to open
his mouth at all, but more or less sipping on that skinny, little bottle
nipple, like a straw. When we try to put him to the breast, it appears
that he doesn't want to suck with a wide open mouth.
My question: Is there some sort of device, kind of like a nuk
nipple that can help train a baby to suck with his mouth open when he is
not feeding? I think a finger would be to narrow, but some sort of
pacifier-type device is what I have in mind.
I've never seen anything like this for sale, so would appreciate any
homemade solutions as well.
Thanks, Cathy Gaston, IBCLC
