Dear Fellow Netters,
I need, if you have time, some assistance in forming a defense for
breastfeeding in general and baby friendly issues. The hospital where I
teach childbirth classes is one of the breastfeeding disaster zones. The
infants are routinely offered suplemental feedings-even when the parents
request no pacifiers or bottles. The infants go to the nursery within an
hour of delivery and remain there for a minimum of four hours.

I am being, to put it mildly, brought in for a lets share what gets said
meeting because what I teach and talk about breastfeeding is not the same as
what the pediatricians and nursery nusres say.

The big issues as far as I can gather are:
                1. Supplementing without medical need is not necessary and
if done can
                             be consider battery.
                2. Infants left in the DR too long come in to the nursery
cold.

I actually have support from the OBs, the DR nurses and most of the
postpartum nurses. One major problem is that the director of the DR and
Postpartum is an oncological certified nurse.

I have been collecting my articles and references to assist my defense. If
any of you out there have the latest AAP guidelines and/or ACOG or any advice
to assist my battle please email or call me at home.

Thanks in advance for all your support!
                                    Ellen Taylor RNC,IBCLC, CPCE
P.S.
Kay Hoover just did a 8 hour inservice before this all came to a head! I
don't think there is any reaching these people and now the director of
pediatrics wants to meet with me to "amicably" settle our differences.
