Andrea: The issue of Martek and DHA supplements has been discussed and
you will find a lot about it in the archives. Of particular interest is a
response from Jim Akre of the WHO which was posted by Kathy Dettwyler on
5/30/97. It very eloquently questioned the validity of their premise that
human milk needs to be supplemented.
It was interesting that a representative from Martek, Diane Benisek,
posted on Lactnet, basically promoting the use of the supplement.
Although it was based on a comparison of the DHA levels in the milk of
American mothers vs Japanese and, I believe, German mothers, suggesting
that the difference was in the diet of the mothers, she did not mention
the dietary sources until I asked her to. I'll forward her post to you.
Alicia.
