Dr. Hale,

I am currently helping a mom whose family is being treated for pinworms. The
doctor prescribed the usual one dose of Vermox. She has a thriving,
completely breastfed six month old girl who weighs 20 lbs. The doctor said
the baby could not receive the Vermox since she was not yet two years old.
She would need to be treated with vaseline around the rectal area in order
to suffocate the pinworms. Isn't the dosage of medication based on weight
rather than age, and if so could this 20 lb. 6 month old receive the Vermox
(ground up in breastmilk)?
Our own family went through this last month, and my then 20 month old also
received the Vermox. She is only 22-23 lbs.

The doctor informed the mom that it is recommended she wean the baby for one
week, but that this decision was up to her. I informed the mom that I did
not wean during treatment and read to her from your book--'96 edition. Our
local lactation clinic also told this mom she did not need to wean.

From your book, I am curious about the mother whose milk production ceased
after being treated with Vermox. Was she taking a higher dose and/or having
a longer course of treatment? I told the mom with whom I am working that
after 2 doses of Vermox at 2 weeks apart, I had no problem with my milk
production.

I'd appreciate any information you can offer.
TIA!
Aloha,
