Dear Dr. Paula:

I found several aspects of your web page interesting. However, I was
frankly appalled at the outdated and incorrect information placed there
about breastfeeding. Perhaps this was provided by someone who is not an
informed physician who is up-to-date with the most current research
findings and management recommendations pertaining to lactation.
Perhaps the person who placed this information on your web page did not
check with you first to verify that the information was as up-to-date as
you would, I am sure, want it to be.

What disturbs me most is that people will assume that you, as a
pediatrician, have provided accurate information when it is not! If they
then choose to follow that information, they will find that
breastfeeding has been made more difficult, their baby is more (not
less) likely to be inadequately fed, the mother will be more (not less)
likely to experience preventable difficulties such as sore nipples and
the like, and most of the clear advantages of natural feeding over the
giving of artificial baby milk will have been lost--all on the altar of
ignorance!

I am sure you will want to change the inaccurate information currently
on your web site.

Because I am always seeking new information, I would also like to know
the references that were used to support such information. It is very
possible that I have neglected to read as widely as I attempt to do in
order to maintain my own currency of informationa about lactation. If
you would be so kind, I would very much appreciate a listing of those
references that were used.

Thank you again for your interest in promoting breastfeeding. I look
forward to a reply from you at your earliest convenience.

                                                                Sincerely,

                                                                Kathleen G. Auerbach, PhD, IBCLC
