I'm very glad to have all of you to ask this question to - in the hopes that
someone will have the knowledge to help out.

I run a local mothers group and one of the moms breastfeeding her 15 month
old has been told she has "reflex sympathetic dystrophy" after a fracture to
a bone joint just above her left wrist.

Her physiotherapist and anesthetist at the hospital want her to wean her
baby and go on steroids after a bone scan - the bone scan also requires her
to stop nursing for 24 hours they say. She does not want to do this!

Her family doctor agrees with the professionals above.

She says, "My mobility in my wrist and fingers is improving slowly with
intensive physiotherapy, but after researching the disease, I am scared
about refusing the steroids. However, I do NOT WANT to wean my baby! He
sleeps with my husband and I, I'm very committed to breastfeeding, and the
weaning would be disruptive to the whole family."

The physiotherapist told her this condition could be chronic, could result
in her being crippled, and can spread. They threw in that it was
irreversible for good measure (or maybe because it is). She is really
scared, and I told her I would ask people who I know advocate
breastfeeding...then she can be sure of getting advice that doesn't suggest
weaning out of ignorance.

Please let me know if any of you can offer this woman anything or refer me
to someone else to ask. I'll be printing and forwarding the information to
her.
