I work in the WIC Program in Paterson, NJ where it is very hot these days and
very humid today.
Recently a mother of a 5 week old requested a home visit. She was still
struggling with latch on and unpleasant feedings.
When I arrived at her humble dwelling, baby was sleeping. We woke him up and
the struggle began. He rooted well and fussed and tried again and again to
latch and suckle. At this time he was mostly bottle fed pumped milk and
occasionally could nurse. Mom is from Jamaica and was determined to
breastfeed.
The tub was not clean. Mom had had a Cesarean and still not up to scrubbing
a tib in the heat. Soooooo..... we went to the kitchen sink. Got baby
undressed and wet. He protested. Mom took off everthing from the waste up,
picked him up and he latched on right away and stayed. Everything was
dripping, of course. After a minute of standing there. We grabbed a towel
and walked them back to their seat. He continued to nurse. It really worked
!!
