I posted this situation last month: mom with history of miscarriage and
one child 10 mo, surprise pregancy, started on progesterone injections,
weaned the 10 mo because of painful contractions while bf.
Situation now: 2 OB's & 1 FP agree that she has developed an allergy to
the progesterone shots (area around injection site was swollen, red, and hot
after an injection; worse after a subsequent injection). OB #1 told her not
to take further "injections", warning of anaphylactic shock; he did an
ultrasound & told the mom that either she was carrying twins and one had
died or that there was something wrong with a singleton pregnancy. OB #2
did an ultrasound and said everything is wonderful, and prescribed oral
progesterone. Have any of you heard of an allergy to progesterone used to
maintain a pregnancy? Do you think this mom should get a third opinion?
