Situation: Suggestions please.
Mom has 8 week old baby. Baby born via difficult birth, and was premature.
Had jaundice, and was placed under lights...and taken off breast, basically.
Mother never pumped adequately, and was given pump but does not like to use
it because she gets so little now.
Baby will bf for 10 minutes, well. Mom supplying half his needs. Other half
is formula...given by syringe.
Mom adverse to using pump. Has SNS, but is not sure about that...she does
wish to bf, and to provide milk for baby, but I do suspect there is some
ambivalence there, as she has not really wanted to use the SNS..and is happy
to syringe feed, knowing that her partner can also participate in this. Is
not comfortable doing outreach to LLL , etc...sees syringe feeding as an
impediment to free travel, etc.
Mom was initially told her baby has a bubble palate, and that he had an
ineffective suck, which may have been true, but it also may have given her a
"belief" about her baby's ability or inability to bf.
I sense that mom is at a pivotal point..and is deciding what to do next. She
is facing a cross country trip in one month, and I sense that either bf will
improve for her, or she will switch to a bottle...if things are not straight
by the trip.
It has been suggested to her that she use reglan. I see this as a temporary
bandaid fix...if she does not get baby to breast to feed more often, the
supply will drop when the reglan stops.
What about Fenugreek? What are the doses please....and any other suggestions
that I may be forgetting, I would appreciate...asap. Thanks Kathleen
