Deborah - the paediatricians here work on giving babies 150ml/kg/day, from
about 5 days of age, fed every three hours. Thus a 4 kg baby would take 4 x
150ml = 600ml divided by 8 = 75ml every three hours. When a low weight gain
baby is catching up they try and work on 180ml/kg/day. I have worked with a
FTT baby who took as much as 220ml/kg/day, baby gained over 60g per day
during the catch-up phase, beautiful to see! In the Neonatal Unit at the
hospital where I visit babies who can receive milk are fed by nasogastric
tube 60ml/kg on Day 1, 80ml/kg on Day 2, 100ml/kg on Day 3, 120/kg on Day 4,
150ml/kg on Day 5, mothers are encouraged to start expressing a s a p, but
the babies may receive formula for the first couple of days if the mother is
not producing enough.
