Help. Need references. A mother called after getting "blasted" (her
word) by her ped for nursing too much and not making her 1 yo eat enough
solids. Mother said the baby eats only a little puffed rice and a
little banana all day. She has offered lots of different kinds and
textures of healthy foods, in which the baby has virtually no interest.
Baby nurses more than 8 times a day, inc. many times a night, which
doesn't bother mom. Weight 28#, weight and height are proportional,
baby is walking. H&H done at 9 mo. was normal. Ped said baby should
have 3 meals/day, no grazing, and cut down of bf so baby will eat more.
Mom doesn't want to, likes things as they are, but is afraid of harming
baby by not forcing baby to eat more food. BAB and Lawrence mention
differing info about baby not learning to chew, critical period, if not
given a chance now. I have had a few moms in LLL who have gone several
months into second year exclusively bf. One did not monitor H&H and it
got too low. I suggested a diet dairy because baby may be eating more
than mom realizes. When does HM (I like human milk better than
breastmilk, bm) not provide adequate protein? Besides distinguishing
between the parenting vs. medical advice being offered by the ped, what
else could mom be doing? What can I tell her?
