Hi, Oh Wise Ones: My friend with the premie is now home and they are
basically almost fully breastfeeding. She had a question which I
couldn't answer. She has a bountiful milk supply and experiences
multiple MER's during feedings. However, she has noted a difference
between her breasts. One side seems to do the expected thing, with MER
shortly after baby begins nursing. The other side, no matter whether she
starts on that or the "normal" side, never has an MER before 4-5 minutes
of sucking. When the MER does finally occur, it is an overwhelming gush,
choking her little munchkin. The baby cannot currently nurse lying
on top of her to let gravity help, and pumping that side prior to a
feeding doesn't seem to help. She's particularly concerned, because
the baby actually ended up in the ER with an apneic spell during one of
these, so she's pumping that side for now and only nursing on the
"normal" ones. Anyone ever work with a mother like this? Any
suggestions? TIA, Alicia. [log in to unmask]
