The recent discussion of pumping and bottlefeeding reminded me of a couple I
saw a few months ago. They called me on a Sunday morning. They were
travelling and their small electric pump had broken down and they were
desperate to get another one right away. When they came to get it, with the
baby, it turned out that the mom had struggled unsuccessfully to get the baby
to latch on and ended up feeding her pumped milk by bottle, so far for four
months! The father seemed very surprised that the pump had broken down and
wondered why. I explained that this pump did not have a large, heavy-duty
motor and was really not designed for being used many times per day as she
was using it. The mom said "But I only pump twice a day". When I expressed
surprise, she said that she got at least 20 oz. each time she pumped and
usually had more than the baby needed! This was in the "I thought I had
heard everything" category!
