Diarrhoea is not a reason to stop breastfeeding. I refer you the Canadian
Pediatric Society guidelines on the management of diarrhoea. You will
probably have to get them from the CPS (try their home page at "www.cps.ca"
and search "ORT" or oral rehydration treatment/therapy).
The exception may be lactose intolerance whih becomes more common with age
and is extremely rare in infancy.
"Toddler's diarrhoea" is a common, benign, condition of childhood that
requires no treatment. It is usually diagnosed in a well child between 1
and 3 years once serious disease/infection has been excluded.
To search these conditions I recommend firstly using a textbook. For
references I suggest using a database such as Medline (limited access is
free at some sites on the Net, eg "www.medscape.com" or the NIH - but
beware hidden charges if you ask for the complete text of an article).
Sometimes the child remains ill because of dietary restriction and, in its
extreme form, starvation. 7 days of oral electrolyte solution and nothing
else is likely to do this. A child with persistent diarrhoea needs medical
assessment and, if nothing is found, a normal diet.
I hope that this helps.
