Hi All,
Jay Simpson here! WIll be coming back soon, but had to pass on a neat
message and thought you all would like to hear it. First an update on
my/our baby Patrick. At 8 wks this kid weighs in at a measley (hah!) 14
pounds and is 24 in long. Nothin' like growing like a weed, hmmm? He is
doing all the normal baby things, smiling and trying to laugh and just being
plain cute.
OK, here is the story...
My friend Karen Evon, IBCLC has been working with a mom who has had an
intersting case. Right breast produces plenty of milk, but left breast
produces maybe 1/4 (if lucky) of what the right breast produces. Baby
growing fine, but at almost 4 mo old, mom got worried and was starting to
think about supplementing with ABM. Baby BF at least 10 times a day.
Karen had attended a seminar where Dr Jack Newman was the speaker (and a
good one at that! I was there, and boy is he a nice guy!). He talked about
breast compression and the benefits. Karen gave this mom the handout that
gave the how-to's and suggested to the mom that she try this one last thing
before supplementing with ABM. Mom gave it a try and came back in 2 wks to
weigh the baby.
Mom came back reporting more breast fullness, and a more audible swallows
heard when baby BF on the breast that she had been doing the compressions on
(the left one). Weighed baby...Baby had gained 2 pounds! Baby has NOT
reduced # of feeds, but has increased poopy diapers and is less gassy (which
had been a complaint of moms beforehand).
SO, Jack, thanks to your info, this baby will not be unfortunate enough to
get ABM! Mom is thrilled, and we have a new tool to use! Thanks!
Love and hugs everyone!
