Hi everyone,
While in the ideal world there would not be a need for gift packs
at all we do live in a real world that is generally less than ideal.
Obviously there are areas where gift packs are totally inappropriate.
However, in most of the U.S. (and perhaps elsewhere) new mothers are
given gifts when they leave the hospital. I do heartily concur
with Jane that a special gift pack
for breastfeeding mothers should replace the formula
oriented packs. Breastfeeding mothers deserve their little gifts as
much, if not more, than those who are feeding babies ABM. As to what to
put in such a pack... The contents would certainly depend on the source
of the funding. I would include:
- nice pictures/drawings of various nursing positions
- management tips and info for the first few weeks
- hand expression instructions
- ideas about how to cope with housework/household help/"baby nurses"
- purified lanolin
- bra pads
- Kiwanis poster handout (from LLLI - not copyrighted)
- information about local resources (LLL leaders, IBCLCs in the area,
other)
- items for the baby that are included in the "other" discharge pack
WITHOUT the ABM or coupons
- short video (only 15-20 minutes) - and I don't know if there is one
available that does exactly what I mean
- info that shows how breastfeeding SAVES MONEY
