Hi Lisa,
When is co-sleeping not co-sleeping? When no one is sleeping very
long. This is when we created a side car arrangement (as per "Nighttime
Parenting" by Sears) wherein we set up the crib but removed the sliding rail
-- luckily for us the crib mattress adjusted so it was the same height as
our bed. We did this at about four or five months old when my second
no-sleeper was waking constantly, obviously distressed by movements in our
bed. We then started out the night with him in the sidecar, easily slipped
over for a snack and slipped back when done. Not more than a foot away, no
more than if I was on the edge and he in the middle of our king size... the
big benefit was he didn't feel our mattress move or our covers and yet I
could still reach an arm over, etc...
As always, when figuring out sleeping arrangements you must take
into account your and the child's personalities and the realities of your
family needs. Co-sleeping is only co-sleeping when everyone is sleeping as
well as they can!
