Elizabeth P. Tencza said, <<My five year old heard a piece on the radio
yesterday that upset her terribly. The opening line was something like
"Breastmilk kills baby." The rest of the story went on to explain that the
mother was addicted to several drugs and fed her newborn while on them. Ever
try to drive down a highway with four kids while trying to explain drug
addiction and responsible journalism to a five year old?>>
I wonder if the radio piece you heard was by Paul Harvey. He does a daily,
five minute news segment called "The Rest of the Story" that the ABC Radio
Network broadcasts to 23 million listeners via 1200+ radio stations across
the USA.
I did not hear the segment about the infant of the drug addicted mother, but
I heard (second hand) that he began his broadcast by saying,
"Mother's milk can be deadly!"
If it is true that Mr. Harvey said this, he is guilty of irresponsible
journalism because the mother's milk was not deadly. The recreational and
prescription drugs (she apparently used both heroin and methadone) that
contaminated the mother's milk allegedly caused or contributed to the baby's
death (the last I heard, the toxicology reports had not come back yet). I
guess an opening line like "Drug abuse can be deadly!" wasn't sensational
enough.
