Hello everyone,
LLL Leader in St. Louis here. Did I catch everyone off line because of
the LLLI Conference :)? Received a call from a woman who is nursing her
7 mo. old son who was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes at 20 days old .
She is very committed to breastfeeding and has the strong support of her
pediatrician and endocrinologist (although oddly, not baby's
immunologist--baby also has extreme food allergies and he wants baby on
a hypoallergenic formula--they aren't even considering that at this
point, and pediatrician says they can expect to exclusively breastfeed
for at least 12-18 mos. and mom continue to provide milk for several
more years!) All of that is really incidental, just interesting. What
this family would really like is ANY information (anecdotal, research,
case studies) on infants with juvenile diabetes and on breastfeeding
said babies. Baby is gaining very well and sounds as if all is going as
well, or better, than can be expected. It is this mom's understanding
that many of these infants do not survive the early weeks and thus there
may simply not be much info available, but I told her I would check
where I could. Info in other sources has been nil. Anybody out there
with any info or experience in this situation??? Thank you!
Andrea Simmons
