I have found this thread interesting. Sometimes mothers do have very good
reasons for not nursing (as someone else listed) and for that reason, when I
approach a pregnant mother I say "If you are planning to breastfeed we have
LLL meetings, you can call me for info, etc." That way she doesn't have to
say yes or no about nursing.
Remember, though, that many (most?) mothers do *not* have good reasons for
not at least trying to breastfeed. When I was pregnant with my first child I
planned on bottle feeding. I figured they were equal health-wise (I read in a
book that abm fed babies died more often of SIDS. I decided it couldn't be
true because if it were *no one* would ever bottle feed!) and I always
thought of bottles as one of the *things* that went with having a baby (just
like the sleepers, and pacifiers, and cribs........) My mother was upset that
I didn't want to nurse (she had nursed all of us) and my oldest sister gave
me a really hard time. Like the person who posted about her SIL, none of
their bugging me changed my mind. What did? During my eighth month I rolled
over in bed one night and some colostrum leaked out against my arm - Wow! I
decided I would breastfeed my baby after all................
