SUBJECT: human milk fortifiers

PRIORITY:
Was a thread on this recently--could search under my name (Sturgess) iin
Lactnet--Nutrition and the MD (newsletter/abstracts) discussed human milk
fortif. in Jan 97 issue, referring to an article in the AM J of Clinical
Nutrition64:142,1996, concluding that "human milk fortifiers can improve short
term growth but benefiicial effects on long-term development remain unproven
and surprising safety questions emerged." (infections, higher blood chem
levels)
When i posted, Dr. Newman's comment on short term growth I think was that we
do not even know that growth rates outside the uterus should match growth
inside, I suppose given the variability of babies in general and the risks
mentioned above, so it may not be the best indicator of the babies health and
development.
Hope this helps
