In the "old days" before bottles were so available, different cultures had different substitutes when baby wasn't at breast.  Even when there were wet-nurses involved, babies weren't necessarily demand fed.  "Sugar tits" come to mind from the South in this country.  My awareness of this is just through being a voracious reader of fiction.  K. Dettwyler, what has your extensive research shown?
