Diane: Doxycycline, if I remember correctly, is better absorbed with
food and milk than tetracycline. The reason that tetracycline is safe
with bf is that it cannot be absorbed by the baby's gi tract because it
is in milk (our recommendations for adults who take tetracycline is to
take it on an empty stomach, without any milk). I would think that it's
safer for the mother to use tetracycline. The inconvenience of having to
take it four times a day on an empty stomach would be outweighed by the
decreased risk to the baby. Unless there has been a recent change I am
not aware of, the efficacy in treating the
Lyme disease is equivalent. Hope this helps. Alicia. [log in to unmask]
