I need help from our 'herbal contingent.' I've got a working mom who
is seeing her supply dwindle despite intensive double pumping at
work, frequent nursing at home, etc. She's been on fenugreek for the
past week (3 caps tid) with marginal improvement in her supply. It's
causing her some diarrhea, so I suggested cutting back a bit, and
perhaps adding a tincture of blessed thistle. She can only find the
capsule form. I have no idea what strength of cap to suggest (she
thinks they come as much as 500 mg--but I don't know if this is the
amount of active ingredient or not), whether the capsule form would
be helpful, how much to take, what kind of side effects (in her or baby) to
watch for, etc. This is a mom very committed to her babe, and trying
like the dickens to avoid formula. Any help any of you can give me
in guiding her would be most appreciated!
Thanks,
Terry Hadley, IBCLC (in hot, muggy yeast-ridden Baltimore)
