I know that women who have experienced sexual abuse often do not like
the thought of nursing. However, for some, it is a godsend.
I also have a history of sexual abuse, as do three of my best friends.
We all nursed because we believed so strongly that it was important for
our babies' health. One in particular really expected to find it
distasteful but was still willing to try it. It has had a special
benefit for all four of us in allowing us to view our breasts as normal
and useful and having a purpose other than providing sexual
gratification for undeserving men.
I am not saying that anyone with such a history should be pressured to
breastfeed, but I think it may be appropriate for them to be informed
that breastfeeding actually helps some women to feel better about their
bodies after suffering abuse.
