Dorothea Olson asked for information for a mother who wanted to know about
breastfeeding's impact on the incidence of SIDS. I would suggest the
mother read the book on this topic by William Sears, "SIDS: A Parent's
Guide to Understanding and Preventing Sudden Infant Death Syndrome,"
Boston:Little, Brown and Company, 1995. It is beautifully written,
addressed to parents who worry about this threat to their babies and also
to those who have already lost a baby to SIDS. I think it is very helpful
for professionals to read also. It has many references and evaluates what
we know and what we don't so far. It has many practical recommendations
for parents, things they can do to lessen (not totally eliminate) their
baby's risk of SIDS. It should be available in your local public library.
