Dear Fellow Lact-Netters -
It is with an extremely heavy heart that I share the following news with you.
Today, March 20, 1997, New Jersey Governor, Christine Todd Whitman
conditionally vetoed legislation that would protect a woman's right to
breastfeed in public. She has sent her own version of the bill (not yet
available) to both houses for concurrance. As I understand it, she had
concerns over two parts of the bill - the first being the reference to an
exemption from jury duty (she felt it was already covered under hardship
circumstances) and the wording of the section dealing with fines.
So - now the work begins again. All breastfeeding supporters and advocates
need to contact the heads of both houses to urge them to post this bill as
soon as possible, for a vote, and then to contact their appropriate
Assemblyman/woman and Senators for their continued support on this bill.
We did it before and almost made a miracle happen - let's do it again and
make it a reality!
If anyone has questions regarding this bill or who to contact, please contact
me privately.
Thank you for your continued support of breastfeeding mothers and their
babies.
WarmLLLy,
Sheila Angalet
