Just had another first -

I had seen mom over 4 weeks ago
- first contact  via phone, and pump rental to her husband as she had to have an
exploratory surgery which precipitated her labor and she was not allowed to
breastfeed in the hospital.
- a personal  contact was day of discharge 3 days pp - came to see me directly
from hospital to see how to position and avoid this enormous and very painful
incision that went almost to her sternum and down to belly-button.  baby had
only had bottles of breast milk, but not breastfeeding, we were able to position
but he had that "guarding" with the back of the tongue that I often see in
c-section babies (he was a vaginal birth).  She was going to continue pumping at
times and bf when she felt able.
- returned at 1 week pp to the support group I have, had sore nipples when baby
was latching and pain deep in breast after feeds.   Nipples bright pink, baby
had white areas in mouth, both saw MD and got topical plus diflucan treatment
for mom and nystatin for baby.  I had mentioned gentian violet, but mom not
interested.
- t/c from mom stating now wants gentiona violet info as nipples not much
better.  Instructions given, but mom never followed through.
- next support group (weekly) nipples seemed better, but montgomery glands very
red.  Stated bf was so painful was back to pumping and bottle feeding even
though baby's suck seems much improved - no more guarding, but now some
clenching.
Recommended she talk to Dermatologist.
-t/c from mom - stated MD(OB/GYN) told her she was allergic to the breast pump -
and when she stopped using it and had baby nursing pain much reduced.

Question- anyone ever had a situation of allergy to a Medela pump?
My husband is a Packaging Engineer an knows plastics - doubts this very much ...

I'm still investigating the possibility of allergy to the soap she was using,
but she doesn't want to try it again as she is doing so much better.

- Saw her again yesterday, she still has questions about breastfeeding and
positioning -  he took 5.6 oz in 25 minutes.  She's feeling overwhelmed with
toddler and this baby, but no real bf problems at  this time...  Nipples no
longer sore, though I still see them as slightly pink...

Since I saw Judy's note thought I'd add this case to the files...
