One problem I have had with the mothers, who are pumping for babies
in NICU, is that they start pumping at the highest pressure from day one.
This often leads to sore nipples. I teach them to start on minimum pressure
and adjust the pressure to a comfortable level - emphasizing that pumping
should be comfortable, not painful. I have always felt it is difficult for
them to remember this instruction because the pressure adjustment is labeled
: "minimum" on the low end and "normal" on the high end. The labeling is
the same on the M----- classic and the A-----E----- classic. The other
morning, a new mom said to me, "if you don't want me to pump at the 'normal'
level, why is it labeled 'normal'. So, we have moms pumping at the
highest pressure because they want to be "normal". I searched the archives
to see if this has been discussed and could find nothing. I'd like to know
what your thoughts/opinions/experiences are with this issue. E-mail on
lactnet or privately and I will forward your messages along with my own to
our hosp M----- rep. Thanks.
