I have read with empathy all the posts about distress and guilt...... I
wonder about the statement made about it being after the holidays , It
sems as though a lot of us have had a higher number of moms with bf
problems this past week or two. I have had my share also..... :(

Mom who delivered at another hospital, baby was given bottles in hosp, mom
wnet home, tried to bf, quit for 5 days then came to see me expecting an
overnight fix........ Got her going with SNS, pumping, syringe
feeding....... Pt called me last night ( I have talked to ther almos t
everyday for a week) and told me that she had decided to stop putting baby
at breast and just pump and bottle feed him. Baby would nurse 2-3 min per
hour from the breast no matter what she did, thats all he would do. I was
disappaointed about her decision, but I told her to bottle feed skin to
skin and to not give up hope and keep trying babe at the breast and maybe
one day he would just do it......She had LLL come to her house and see
her, this is so frsutrating to me because this one neighboring hospital is
passing out nipple shields like water and giving bottles to bf babies on a
routine basis and I have NO idea how to get them to change..... I have
seen 4 moms from this hosp in the past 2 weeks, I tell them to write a
letter to the OB head nurse and to the administrator of the
hosp.......maybe thats the only thing that will help!

Then the good news....... Had a mom who went home bottlefeeding and called
me 2 days later and was breastfeeding beautifully :) There IS hope :)

I thik we cannot assume responsibility for the decisions our clients
make.... We dont live in their houses and dont walk in their shoes, we can
only do the best job we can to assist them to their goal and not feel
guilty when things dont work out the way we think they should......
