Hi Lactnetters!
I'd like to clear up the confusion about herbs & homeopathy. The terms are often
used interchangeably which is incorrect.
Homeopathic medicines are given one of two ways - drops or globules which resemble
tiny sugar pills. Homeopathy is difficult to explain, but basically it's similar
to immunization. You give the body extremely small amounts of what's ailing it
in order to cure. In other words, for allergies you would give HISTIMINE. For
vomiting, a homeopath would Rx homepathic IPECAC. In addition, traditional
homeopaths give their patients their "constitutional remedy" when they go off track.
At the first sign of illness, I take a dose of NAT MUR. One of my daughters is
a SULFUR type and the other is PHOSP. I've been using homeopathy for about 6 years.
I don't reject conventional medicines, but my family hardly ever needs them. My 5
year old has taken antibiotics only once in her life for strep. Most of the kids in
her class practically live on them during the winter. It is very important to
consult a qualified homeopath (preferably a physician.) Also, know where you are
buying your medicines. I would only buy at a pharmacy where I know they are handled
properly. I wouldn't trust chain drugstores or health food stores. The medicines
cannot be taken with food. A good book for beginners is "The Complete Family
Guide to Homeopathy." p. 236 has a good chart on bf problems. In general,
homeopathy is safe for the whole family. O.K... I admit, I even use it on the dog!
Doses of 30C or 6C are o.k. to buy over-the-counter. 1M or more should be Rxed
only by a dr.

You have to be more careful with herbs. They are available in a number of different
forms - powders, pills, liquid etc. There's a lot of snake oil out there. Most of
it quite expensive. Again, know your practioner and buy ONLY at a store you trust.
Some herbs are easy to grow. I have a number of them in flower boxes on the porch.
Aloe Vera is great for skin rashes. Thyme for colds. Oil of evening primrose
capsules are very helpful for women after childbirth suffering from depression.
The Holistic Pediatrician by Kathi Kemper is a good resource book.

Does anyone know if sage, parsley and mint reduce breastmilk? Does hops increase?
As this topic is a favorite or mine, I'd love to correspond with any of you
interested to shard info.
