I have been contacted by a mother nursing a 3 and 1/2 year old child who has
been advised to take Bactrim for a persistent chest cold but also advised
that her child must nurse while she is taking this medication. He nurses
three times a day (morning, nap and bedtime) for about 10 minutes each time.
She begged for a medication that was compatible with nursing but was told
this was what she needed. She tried to take it over Thanksgiving but only
lasted three days before she began to feel better and stopped taking the
antibiotic and started nursing the child. The chest cold worsened. She
returned to the doctor and began a new prescription. Now she is getting much
pressure from husband and doctor to finish all ten days of her prescription
(there are seven days remaining) but the three year old is hard to console
and doesn't understand why he can't nurse.
All you experts out there - could Bactrim be compatible with BF in this
situation (an older child nursing only a few times a day for comfort)? Is
there another antibiotic that might be just as effective? What would you
advise in this situation? Thanks you in advance for your help.
