The Australian hold seems to work well for many large women (including
me!). This position, with mother lying on her back with baby on top of
her, allows alot of the excess breast tissue to flow off to the side of the
body. This allows the baby more ready access to the nipple area. Mom may
be most comfortable learning this position lying on a couch with baby lying
against the back cushions of the couch. This way she won't have to worry
about baby rolling off.
Also, sitting in a reclining chair with baby in the football hold is very
comfortable for many large moms.
In a sitting position, use a rolled hand towel under the breast to raise it
to a higher level.
