Hi Kathleen D.,
Of course I watched this movie with my children, constantly reassuring my
daughter and son that the little boy in the movie had a much worse case
of epilepsy than my daughter does. I couldn't help but parallel the
paternalism of the neurologist with what sometimes happens in hospital
nurseries. I have known women referred for psychiatric consults because
they insisted on breastfeeding their jaundiced infants, or signing their
well babies out against medical advice. The 'psych consult' is the
weapon of choice for paternalistic physicians in NY who do not like the
fact that parents disagree with them. It has been used against some of
my clients and LLL mothers.
Not that the ketogenic diet is a panacea, but the pharmaceutical
industry is the most profitable industry in the US (yes, beyond
computers).
