I think it was Jan Barger's message that jogged a memory of mine - a
great story of breast vs pacifier. We were flying to the States from
Israel to show off our firstborn. She was 5 months old but already eating
solids. I was not only nervous about flying, but flying with a very
active 5 month old? I thought that I had arranged for the plane to be
stocked with baby food for Danielle, and was really and truly annoyed to
discover once in the air that there was zip. OK, so I nursed the whole
way over, and Danielle was an angel. Ah, but. There was a toddler also on
the flight, about 2 yrs old, who constantly had a pacifier plugged in his
mouth. At regular intervals (and this was a 12 hour flight, mind you),
there would be a shriek from the kid and a frantic search under seats,
forcing everyone in the row to get up. Never mind that it was the middle
of the night. I can still hear this kid's screams. Let's hear it for the
breast! Judy Knopf in Beer Sheva, Israel
(P.S. On the way back to Israel,
we couldn't fly the same airline, since the Yom Kippur War had broken
out, and the only airline flying to Israel was the Israeli line. I didn't
even think to "order" baby food on the way back, since I absolutely
needed to nurse and cuddle my baby as much as she needed me! - my "baby
brother "
was in the army and nobody seemed to know where he was. After this
experience, at times I have to work hard to be understanding when a mom
tells me that she was "too nervous" to breastfeed...)
