Dear Lactnetters,
Someone mentioned/questioned the U.S. Delegation vote to "accept"
the WHO Marketing code for the sale of breastmilk substitutes (?). A few
years back, I did give a presentation on the subject, my info was mainly
from the Canadian source, Infact. Is that the correct name? Well, I remember
the date as May 9, 1994. Prominent people influential were Ted Kennedy, C.
Evert Koop, Ralph Nader and Jimmy Carter.
When I did the *formal* research (got the main stuff by fax)
Infotrak was completely barren of any reference. The references I had stated
that the US was shamed into the Yes vote, after thirteen years as the only
opposing vote. The African nations, as a team, were very influential in
swaying US delegates to the World Health Assemby to vote favorably. This I
guess means that the CODE is US endorsed and NOT US enforced. I'm not an
advocate of govt. en-FORCEment for women to BF. But the non-issuance of ABM,
baby mag ads, etc. would be great.
Thanks also for the input on infected M glands ...yeast has been a factor
here too.
