Nancy and others: Heavens to Mergatroyd! I want to make it very clear
that I was only *speculating* about a possible connection between
postpartum depression and thyroid disease. I based my original remark
upon what I remembered observing in my daughter, listening to her blaming
her menstrual cycle for mood swings, and most important what I read up on
thyroid disease in endocrinology texts. Most definitely anecdotal, but
most definitely something to keep in mind, since we all know how
under-researched we are! And if anyone knows of a well-researched
reference on postpartum hypothyroidism incidence, I think this would
be important for all of us to know. IMO, if it were *known* that this
incidence were very high, then peds wouldn't be so quick to give up on
bfing, and would send Mom to her FP for a thyroid workup, and then
*his* patient could start receiving the gold standard. I'll never
forget being shocked when I first heard that incidence of
physiological neonatal jaundice was around 60%! Was it this that
finally convinced the neonatologists to stop the routine bili lights?
Maybe, just maybe, something like that is going on with the thyroid pp?
Have a great year, all! Judy Knopf (who admits to obsessing on thyroid)
