Ok Netters, It's time for my first posting to you all. (HI JAN) I'm an OB
RN in Eureka, CA. I'm also an LC with my own business for the last five
years. I took the lactation boards this summer and Can't wait to hear.
Now, this Ross booklet has been bothering me since the moment I found it
laying around our hospital nursery. I've been working with the nurses on
NOT giving out abm breastfeeding books for some time. Then this little
pretty booklet comes out and the nurse hands it to me and says " This is a
great book and look it was written and consulted by 3 IBCLC's" and one
other very well published women in our field. So, what is the message to
our staff? Should we forget about the WHO code, because this book doesn't
mention abm? I was blown-away to see these Authors names on the front
cover. These booklets are undermining the goals for a breastfeeding
friendly (normal) society for the nurses and for the poor parents that read
them. Ross has an inherent conflict of interest with women breastfeeding
today. Don't be fooled by their clever marketing tactics. Rosses logo is
front and center on the booklet. There are also many subtle messages in
this booklet. For instance, " You can breastfeed while you are away from
home and hardly be noticed. To make nursing as easy and as discreet as
possible:...". Great, we certainly don't want to be noticed. I can go on
and on and on, but it's late and I have a difficult consult tommrow.
Perhaps now that I've broken the ice I'll bring this difficult consult on
line.
Thanks for letting me vent.
Star Siegfried, RN, BA, IBCLC (I hope)
