Just a personal note:
I contracted Hepatitis A seventeen years ago when I was seven months
pregnant. During the week I spent in prepartum trying to stop premature
labour, I told everyone with whom I came in contact, even insisting that
the chief neonatologist visit me in my room, that I intended to
breastfeed my baby. I also insisted that the hospital contact the
Centre for Disease Control in Atlanta. The CDC comment was that if the
baby was going to get Hepatitis, he would probably be infected in utero.
Michael arrived by emergency C-Sec ( Breech with prolapsed cord ) at
thirty weeks, received Immune globulin, was fed only my breastmilk first by
gavage then at the breast, and was discharged to home on Day 26, fully
breastfeeding, and less jaundiced than Mom and Dad. One funny aspect was
that the entire family, parents and
six older children were infected. and the local newspaper mentioned an
epidemic of hepatitis at my children's school, all my children plus one
classmate of the grade 3 son. Hope this mother gets to breastfeed-- it
made recovery much easier.
