Hi all! First let me apologize for posting my personal request to Cindy to
the list. One quick slip of the button....Bingo, mail to 799 people!!

I have real concerns about reusing pump kits. My understanding is that,
while HIV is a fragile virus, Hepatitis B can live quite a while. I have
heard that a baby died of Hep B infection when a pump kit was loaned
between LLL members. [I do not know if this is truth or folklore.]
Regardless, I can see the possibility of kits getting recycled without
fully being cleaned in my local WIC program, even if we had an autoclave on
hand. I think the risks are too great. I realize this poses a cost issue
for moms and for programs. I do know that M..... has one-time only use
kits available that people could use for pump demos, perhaps A..E.. does
also.

I also think we need to remind moms that rental pumps shouldn't be shared.
I once loaned a rental pump to a mom who was living in a homeless shelter.
When she brought it back, she mentioned that two other moms who were
staying in the shelter had borrowed it, using her pump kit. YIKES, I was
horrified. Everything seems to have turned out to be OK in this case. It
would never occur to me that women might share their pump kit without
sterilizing it. Now I mention when loaning out a pump that "this kit is
yours alone and is for your sole use."

Just sign me Cautious on Cape Cod,
