Hi lactnetters:

I've received one call about "What's safe to take?" and I'm anticipating
more. However, I don't have a Hale book for reference and I cannot find two
common ingredients (to many cough suppresent containing OTCs)
Dextromethorphan and guaifenesinlisted in the AAP lists in the new or old
BAB, Lawrence or anything else I have on hand. I searched the archives for
'95 and '96 and came up with nothing. If anyone out there can give me an idea
of how safe these are, I'd love to hear. I finally found guaifenesin under a
combination prescription drug in a pill book not specific to breastfeeding
info, but the other ingredient was discussed, not the guaifenesin. I know
what they do and what they're for and that they've been around for a long,
long time....but I do not have anything to tell moms. :-(

I write to the list because from what I've seen on the news this influenza
season we may all be getting calls. The larger newspaper for my area
(So.Western VA) had an article just the other day saying that the flu people
are getting in droves was not thought to have been included in the vaccine
people took. If you have information about any of the other common
ingredients to OTC meds for flu, that would be very helpful as well.

TIA and Happy New Year!

Margaret Ann
