Anne Pfannkoch,
You might write a letter to the LC or Maternal-Child director. You could say
something like "I was very surprised to learn that fresh EBM was never used
or was thrown away after such and such a time, etc". Be very tactful and
polite. I would refer them to The Human Milk Banking Assn of North America,
Inc. and their publication "Recommendations for Collection, Storage, and
Handling of a Mother's Milk for her own infant in the Hospital Setting."
p. 10 says refrig milk can be used within 48 hrs. (You have heard about 5
days for fresh milk in refrig for healthy at home babies - but in hosp it is
stricter - they discuss this). I also would point out some liability issues
re giving ABM instead of EBM - do the parents know this? Does family have
allergy hx or diabetes, etc? This is preposterous! Also you could send a
copy to the hosp. risk manager (lawyer) - they may force the unit to correct
this.
I often struggle with whether or not to do something - usually I try to do
something - I am an avid letter-writer (e-mail now), it is less
confrontational. At least you would feel like you tried. By the way, I
would keep a copy of your letter in case there were any repercussions.
