Pat, I saw your post and had to write. A wonderful >90 greatgrandmother once
complimented me on picking up, holding and carrying my baby and commented on
how lucky I was that people were so "much more enlightened nowadays." She
went on to tell me about this Holt guy and the advice he gave. I said, "How
awful it must have been not to be able to pick up your babies!" She looked at
me conspiratorially and said, "OOH, I still picked them up... but I worried
for years that I'd ruined them. They turned out fine after all." I know her
family and they turned out marvelously.
And, my 8-year-old marine biologist who has exhausted our library's juvenile
collection of whale, dolphin and porpoise books, says, "They squirt at/into
the baby's mouth."
Makes sense...marine mammals have just a slightly more ejective milk ejection
reflex!!!
