I have recieved a couple of calls about rabies over the years and have been
told by people at the Infectious Disease Division of Texas Dept of Health
that breast milk is not considered a route of transmission for rabies in any
animals. They said there should be no risk of transmission to the infant
through human milk and the shots if the animal is rabid (or is not found-
which in this case it was) are not contraindicated in breastfeeding because
they are not orally bioavailable (that's why they give shots). So please
reassure this mother that her baby should not be at risk. Also if she was a
responsible pet owner maybe her cat had been vaccinated. Cathy Liles
