Hello all,

A few weeks ago I posted concerning the magazine Southern Exposure. They
are planning some feature stories on women's health in 1997, and are
willing to include articles on bf.

A few of you have already contected Pat Arnow, the editor, with some
information. I spoke to her today and she said that she may be slow
responding, but she is interested and will review all the information she
receives.

Also, I have a few more details about what they're planning:

They will include articles on women's health in each issue of the magazine
for 1997 -- (they are a quarterly journal, so this will mean coverage in 4
issues!) The writer's guidelines they are sending out currently list "women
and health" as the number 1 issue of interest for the cover section.

Pat welcomes any information you can send her -- and you are also welcome
to write an article and submit it for publication. Below is an excerpt from
their Writers' Guidelines, so you can see the slant they are looking for,
and see the types of pieces they publish. If you're interested in sending
them an article, please e-mail me for a complete set of writer's
guidelines, or contact Southern Exposure at <[log in to unmask]>.

Note: Southern Exposure covers the following states:

   Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, DC
North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky
   Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Arkansas
   Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Oklahoma

Excerpt from Southern Exposure's Writers' Guidelines

Southern Exposure is an award-winning quarterly journal published by the
Institute for Southern Studies, a non-profit educational and research
center. The journal serves as a forum in which participants in Southern
movements for social change can share ideas, perspectives, and information
about the history, culture, and political economy of the South.

We are always looking for writers who can describe and explain political
and cultural developments in ways that will interest non-specialists.
Whenever possible, articles should recount specific experiences of
individual Southerners or grassroots groups and relate them to larger
issues.

Whatever the story, we want the reader to know why she or he should care
about it: What do particular events indicate about the workings of our
society, our economy, or our political system?

We accept investigative reports, profiles, oral histories, photos, social
commentary, and short stories that reflect our interest in Southern culture
and social change.

Articles run from 500 words in our Southern News Roundup to 3,500 words or
more for a major piece.

  * Roundup: a collection of short articles including ones about
powers-that-be up to no good, people fighting back, and
                     quirky,funny, and off-beat items. 250-750 words.

  * Voices: essays, interviews, or articles about personal experience
that informs political/social ideas. 500-2,100 words.

  * Blueprint: a how-to guide from organizations and people on the
frontlines. 750-2,100 words. Include listing of
resources. .
  * Investigative hard-hitting investigative journalism about
Reporting: economic and social injustice in the region.
                     Up to 3,500 words.

  * Features: article or interview about culture and issues in the South.

  * Cover Section: 28 pages of articles, interviews, essays, photos, etc.,
                     each issue on special topics.

                     Topics of interest:
(it's a long list with "Women and heath" at the top.)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

My hope is that we can get bf integrated into each of the four issues.
Wouldn't that be great?
