I was told the other morning that one of the new teenage moms who had delivered
the night before was ready to quit breastfeeding. I went in to see her and it
was obvious the problem was positioning. When the baby latched correctly, there
was no pain. She still was not convinced she wanted to continue. I asked her
if any of her friends or family had breastfed. She said NOBODY. I sat and
talked to her about the advantages, she wasn't convinced. I asked her if she
had seen the Anita Baker video when she was at the health department for her
prenatal visits. She perked up. No, she hadn't seen it. What was it? I told
her about Anita Baker singing the song, Giving you The Best That I Got to her
baby, and that she had breastfed her children and was very proud that she did
it. She seemed more interested, and said she would try it a bit longer.
On the 3 day follow up call, this mom said "Ann, honest to God I almost quit
breastfeeding last night but I kept remembering that song and singing it, and I
kept on, you know the Anita Baker song."
On the 6 day follow up call, she is breastfeeding and doing well. I told her
Anita would be proud... I am!
