Lactnetters,
I became convinced of the thrush/fussiness/colicky connection with thrush
a few years ago when a mother in our LLL group developed thrush in her
mouth. She already had nipple candidiasis and her nursing baby had thrush.
She said her mouth was very painful, her whole esophagus felt raw every time
she swallowed, and that she burped all the time. She laughingly said she
was tempted to behave like her baby, except she was supposed to act like a
grown-up. :)
Since that time I have routinely asked mothers whom I know/think they &
their babies have yeast if their babies are fussy and burp a lot. They
usually respond with a very surprised, "yes". Many mothers report back that
the fussiness goes away along with the thrush. Just being given a possible
reason (sore mouth & esophagus, hurts to suck/swallow) for the fussiness
seems to help them cope better.
Something else I have observed is that mothers with thrush often say that
milk supply seems to decrease when they have thrush. Working moms who are
pumping say that they are not able to pump as much milk, and their breasts
are "still full after pumping". I wonder if nipple pain interferes with
milk release (hence the still-full feeling & little pumped milk), then less
milk is produced, thus reducing supply. Same scenario would be true with
the mom who is bf only: nipple pain & poor milk release coupled with a baby
who doesn't want to nurse much/well because his mouth hurts. Thoughts, anyone?
What's the chance that some cases of black stools with bili lights are
just normal meconium that's finally being pooped out? Is not retained
meconium a big source of reabsorbed bilirubin? It is possible that if the
baby who is jaundiced suddenly begins to be fed a lot more than he was
previously getting (and maybe was passing little/no meconium stool), that
the black stool which gets pooped out might be more related to feeding and
only coincidental with use of bili lights, not a result of their use. Just
an idea.
